What's Petanque? This YouTube video (Carolina Petanque Club) explains the French game petanque, a "cousin" to horseshoes and bocce ball. Social, inexpensive to play, maybe "addictive?" Amelia Island is hosting the 2009 Petanque America Open Tournament near the Fernandina harbor front the weekend of November 14 - 15, 2009. Players are flying in from Europe and Canada, and around the U.S. The landmark Palace Saloon in Fernandina has built Petanque courts in their rear yard behind the saloon for practice -- a training place for the Amelia Island teams. Head to the historic district to see this event and try it out for yourself -- extra courts will be set up at the tournament so people can give it a try. Here's a link to great blog about the game (includes some info relating to Fernandina and Amelia Island http://petanqueamericaopen.blogspot.com ).
