Another year has passed, and it's time again for the biggest event held on this barrier island, the Shrimp Festival. The town is gearing up for this huge tourist event. The festival is celebrating its 46th year in 2009.
This year the crowds are reportedly estimated to be in the 130,000 to 150,000 range, if the weather is fair over the weekend, and it's forecast to be nice (only 10% to 20% chance of a shower, temps in low to mid-80s).
You can bet the town folk are busy working on their parade costumes and floats. The parade is a ritual for locals -- a real glimpse of community spirit. Head downtown to Fernandina's historic district Thursday, April 30th for the biggest parade of the year. The parade starts at 6 p.m., but get there early for a prime viewing spot along the parade route (historic Centre Street and Ash Street). It's a "feel good" event, so try to forget life's stresses for an evening, as the smiles will be plentiful in the heart of Fernandina.
