Event Description

LIVING HISTORY WEEKEND: Fort Clinch State Park will host a re-enactment at the historic fort on Saturday, June 5 and Sunday, June 6, 2010. See one of the most well-preserved 19th Century American forts and interact with living historians to experience life at the historic fort (National Register of Historic Places) as it was in 1864. There will be soldiers in period costume involved in marching drills, cooking and daily activities. Life during the Civil War era is recreated at Fort Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach the first weekend each month and typically guests can see a variety of activities: artillery demonstrations, kitchen and laundry, carpenter shop, blacksmith and more. See living history from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday on the first weekend of every month, and 9 am until noon on the first weekend Sunday at Fort Clinch State Park, Amelia Island, Florida. Fort Clinch started to be built in 1847 at the mouth of the St. Mary’s River for protection of Fernandina Harbor’s deepwater port. Fort Clinch was a military post during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War II. The fort is a third system fortification.

Fees: Park entrance fee ($6 per vehicle for 2 to 8 passengers). Single car occupant is $4. Plus $2.00 per person Fort admission. Contact: For more information, call Fort Clinch 904- 277-7274.

Directions: Take I–95 to the Fernandina Beach/Callahan exit (Milepost Exit 373 - Old Exit 129), and travel east toward the Atlantic Ocean on A1A. (This road becomes 8th Street within the town limits of Fernandina.) Stay on this road, (A1A), for 16 miles until you come to the intersection of 8th Street and Atlantic Avenue. Turn right on Atlantic Avenue and go about two miles, Fort Clinch State Park's entrance will be on the left. (If you go too far, about another 200 yards is the beach/Atlantic Ocean, at Fernandina's Main Beach Park.)
